Young explorers will not want to miss the Nature Expedition program hosted by Carl Sandburg College and the University of Illinois Extension.

The Nature Expedition is a summer enrichment program for 9- to 13-year-olds that will give them a chance to explore and learn about the outdoors through a variety of activities. The program meets from 9 a.m.-noon July 10-12 on Sandburg’s Main Campus in Galesburg, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd. The cost is $20 to register, with a registration deadline of July 8.

Join 4-H instructor Mike Moody as he shares his vast knowledge of nature and wildlife. He will encourage students’ participation in natural resources management, teach concepts that will lead to sound decision-making on orienting a map with GPS navigation and share fun facts about animals.

Wendy Ferguson, master gardener program coordinator with the University of Illinois Extension, will present how to use all of your senses to explore the natural world. Students will learn about “deer ears” and “owl eyes” as a way of observing our environment and learn how to start a nature journal that combines words, sketches and scientific data to build a record of their encounters with their “nature neighbors.” All participants will create a nature journal to keep.

To register or for more information, contact Sandburg’s Corporate & Leisure College at 309.345.3501 or community@sandburg.edu. Registration forms are also available for download at www.sandburg.edu/youthprograms.
